Hi, I'm Hannah!
I’ve always loved the outdoors and grew up fishing with a spinning rod. My dad is the type that carries a fishing rod with him “just in case”. My stepdad started fly fishing when I was in high school, but at the time it just seemed so hard. When my husband and I first started seriously dating and combining our lives - we tried to be considerate of how we would blend our hobbies. He is still learning how to read and I am still teaching him to cook, but somehow I was met with the choice of picking up a set of golf clubs or a fly rod - and here we are.
Full disclosure - my husband is a skilled teacher, so his patience with me through the process has been a huge part of my love for learning how to cast. I would 100% be lying to you though if I didn’t confess that the moment I “fell in the hole” was when I caught my first big brown on the White River with our bestie guide, Jonathan.
Before that catch, I knew I loved fly fishing because of the peace and serenity of the river. Whether you are navigating busy tailwaters or stream fishing, you can bet that your environment is always going to lower your heart rate and elevate your mood. As a bonus, there is something about connecting with a trout on a fly line that is unlike anything else.
Years ago, my sister-in-law Brooke and I went out with our bestie guide (Jonathan) on the White River for some mom time off. We were so grateful for the time on the water and together, but something that Jonathan said to me that day has stayed with me and is part of why I started this site. He said, “It never matters the size of the fish or who catches what - girls are so freakin’ excited for each other every time.” He has always been complimentary that when women are with a guide, they listen.
Fly fishing isn’t easy. There is so much to learn about technique and pattern and rhythm and fish and bugs and the list can go on for miles and it’s constantly changing. When a man gets into a boat with another man - you can imagine how resistant many of them are to “guidance”. When I realized that, I also came to the realization that this sport can truly be for the girls.
It’s hard to get started when you feel like everyone else is an expert, but I am here to tell you that couldn’t be further from the truth. Most anglers on the water are figuring it out with Every. Single. Cast.
So, thank you for joining us at Suite Fly. I hope this space feels like a warm hug right before a hatch.
